WWII U.S. Women's Army Corps (WAC) Enlisted Woman's "Hobby Hat" (Size 22 1/2)
This is an original, and somewhat uncommon, WWII U.S. WAC enlisted woman's "Hobby Hat", named after the organization's director, Oveta Culp Hobby. It is constructed of a summer-weight khaki material. The front is decorated with the small brass disc insignia, as used by U.S. Army enlisted women, so we know this was used by the WAC, as opposed to its predecessor, the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), which used insignia independent of the Army prior to its conversion into the WAC in 1943. It is tagged a size 22 1/2. The interior is marked with the laundry number of its original owner, "C-0197". A search of the enlistment records produces two possible matches: Alice M. Cornelius, serial number A-310197 and Lorraine Cote, serial number A-100197.
