Original WW2 U.S. 27th ID PTO Camo Painted Fixed Loop McCord M1 Helmet Shell (May 1942) For Sale

WWII U.S. 27th ID Camo Painted Fixed Loop McCord M1 Helmet Shell (May 1942)

This is an original early-WWII U.S. McCord manufactured front seam fixed loop M1 helmet shell, with a distinctively "Pacific Theater of Operations" black-green camouflage paint scheme - commonly utlized by members of the 27th Infantry Division. At some point in its life it left Army supply, as evident by the interior inscription, which reads: "C. W. Roberts, U.S.N., 4th Barg., U.S.M.C., A.V.P." There remains a substantial research opportunity for its new owner in deciphering this information, however we believe C. W. Roberts was likely a USN Corpsman attached to the Marines. In addition to the camouflage, the front of the helmet exhibits USN rank for a "Second Class" distinction, while the rear of the helmet is painted with a red disc. The Japanese did not abide by the Geneva Convention and, in fact, targeted U.S. servicemen who were wearing medical insignia on their helmets, which resulted in a wide variety of improvised medical markings. Perhaps the most peculiar markings are "Butt Sit", better legible when the helmet is upside down and being used as a chair. All of the painted markings have been authenticated with the assistance of advanced digital microscopy. The paint's micro cracking, which most forgers have yet to correctly replicate, is readily apparent under magnification. The heat stamp of 167B dates the helmet's production to May 1942. It retains its original cork texture and OD#3 (khaki) chinstrap. The chinstrap exhibits the early cast-brass buckle, carried over from the M1917A1 helmet. This helmet would be an ideal match for a liner with non-painted steel A-washers.
