Original WW2 U.S. 28th Infantry Div. Fixed Loop M1 Helmet & Rayon Westinghouse Liner Set For Sale

WWII U.S. 28th Infantry Div. Fixed Loop M1 Helmet & Rayon Westinghouse Liner Set

This is an original WWII U.S. 28th Infantry Division M1 helmet set - albeit, for the reasons described below, one that was almost certainly paired together by a prior collector. The McCord manufactured front seam fixed loop helmet shell has a heat stamp of 750E, dating its production to December 1943. In addition to the original handpainted "Keystone" marking, the helmet retains its original olive drab factory finish, cork texture, and OD#3 (khaki) chinstraps. The helmet's interior exhibits a rust stain that has not transferred to the Westinghouse liner's exterior, pointing to their relatively recent marriage. The liner features non-painted steel A-washers and a rayon suspension, dating the liner's production to mid-1942. The liner's exterior nametape and the Paul K. Weil Co. manufactured suspension are both identified to Henry A. Drake, serial number 30000193. View the Veteran's Information section for more details regarding Drake's life and military service; however a point of immediate interest is Drake's date of enlistment - November 14, 1944. This particular helmet's 28th Infantry Division insignia is the large, "borderless" design, which was commonly applied to helmets just prior to the Battle of the Bulge. Given that the Battle of the Bulge began just one month after Drake's enlistment, it is highly unlikely this helmet shell belonged to him. The liner comes complete with an original size 6 7/8 rayon headband, neckband, and a green buckled leather liner strap. The leather liner strap features United Carr rivets and indicia of being pinned with a piece of insignia. The suspension appears to have once had the later style spring clip headband, and the neckband is constructed of a portion of an original rayon headband that was cutdown, so these components are almost certainly recent replacements. Nonetheless, this helmet displays quite well and would serve as the ideal helmet for the intermediate collector who is looking to wade into divisional painted pieces.
